What Is Leukemia and How Is It Diagnosed?

Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow, leading to the production of abnormal white blood cells. There are several types of leukemia, including acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

Leukemia Cancer Diagnosis

A final Leukemia cancer diagnosis requires a combination of tests to detect the formation of abnormal cells and identify the exact type and stage of leukemia cancer:

  • Blood Tests: A complete blood count (CBC) is the first diagnostic test used to check for abnormal levels of leukocytes, red blood cells, and platelets in leukemia. Leukemia is indicated when there are very high or very low white blood cell counts.
  • Bone Marrow Biopsy—A bone marrow biopsy involves taking a sample from the hipbone to detect the presence of leukemia cells. This test is recommended to verify the diagnosis.
  • Cytogenetic Testing—Cytogenetic testing is a diagnostic test that examines the chromosomes in leukemia cells to identify genetic abnormalities. It helps identify leukemia subtypes and consider treatment options.
  • Flow cytometry: This diagnostic test helps identify the characteristics of blood or bone marrow cells, which aid in classifying leukemia and determining the specific type.

Leukemia Cancer Prognosis

Leukemia prognosis varies depending on the type of leukemia, stage of the disease, age and overall health of the patient, and response to treatment. Advanced-stage leukemia cancer reduces the Leukemia cancer survival rate

Leukemia Treatments

Leukemia treatment options vary for every individual, depending upon the type of leukemia, stage of the leukemia, age and overall health of the patient. The most common Leukemia teatments used:

  • Radiation Therapy: Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays or other types of radiation to kill cancer cells or keep them from growing. AML for example is sometimes treated with external radiation therapy. This type of radiation therapy uses a machine outside the body to send radiation toward the area of the body with cancer.
  • Chemotherapy for Leukemia: Chemo for leukemia cancer utilizes chemicals to destroy leukemia cells. Depending on the type of cancer, you may require a single drug or a combination of drugs to treat leukemia.
  • Targeted Therapy: Targeted therapy is a type of leukemia treatment that targets proteins that control how cancer cells grow, divide, and spread. It is the foundation of precision medicine.
  • Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy for Leukemia utilizes the body’s own immune system to better combat the cancer cells.
  • Stem Cell Transplant: A procedure in which a patient receives healthy stem cells (blood-forming cells) to replace their own stem cells that have been destroyed by treatment with radiation or high doses of chemotherapy.

Debra Bowler

If an annoying cyst on my hand hadn’t interfered with my normal daily routine, I might not have discovered that I had late-stage lung cancer. What was even more frightening was when my oncologist told me that the 5-year survival rate was at most 15%.

Well, it’s only now, after more than 8 years since my diagnosis, that I’m able to relax a bit and just live my life including to help launch XpertPatient.com.   Creating a truly patient-centric experience has been one of the most incredible things I’ve done since my diagnosis.  Knowing that my insights and experience are helping other cancer survivors through their journey is definitely rewarding.
