What Is Liver Cancer and How Is It Diagnosed?

Liver cancer, also known as hepatic cancer, starts when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in the liver. The most common type of liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which typically develops in people with chronic liver conditions such as cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis B or C. Liver cancer can be diagnosed through a combination of imaging tests, blood tests, and biopsy procedures:

Blood Tests – One of the key tests used in diagnosing liver cancer is the Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) test. Elevated AFP levels may indicate the presence of liver cancer, though it can also be elevated in other liver conditions.

Ultrasound – A liver ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image of the liver and detect abnormalities such as tumors or lesions.

CT Scan or MRI – Imaging tests like CT scans or MRI help to assess the size, location, and spread of tumors in the liver. These scans can also reveal if the cancer has spread to other areas of the body.

Liver Biopsy – A liver biopsy involves taking a small sample of tissue from the liver to examine it for cancer cells. This test is often done under imaging guidance to ensure accurate sampling.

Liver Cancer Diagnosis and Starting Treatment

A liver cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but understanding your options is essential for making informed decisions about your treatment. Depending on the cancer’s stage, treatment options may include surgery (such as a liver transplant or partial hepatectomy), targeted therapy, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy.

It’s important to consult with specialists who can assess the extent of the cancer and determine the best course of treatment. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, consider reaching out to support organizations such as the Liver Cancer Partnership for resources and emotional support during your treatment journey.

Liver Cancer Survival Rate

Liver Cancer Survival Rate By Liver Cancer Stage

The 5-year survival rate for liver cancer depends on the stage at diagnosis, which can vary greatly:

  • Stage 0 Liver Cancer Survival Rate is around 70-90% (Cancer is confined to the liver and may be treated with surgery or a liver transplant)
  • Stage 1 Liver Cancer Survival Rate is approximately 50-70% (Tumor is localized within the liver and can be surgically removed)
  • Stage 2 Liver Cancer Survival Rate is around 30-50% (Cancer has spread to nearby blood vessels)
  • Stage 3 Liver Cancer Survival Rate is about 10-30% (Cancer has spread to surrounding tissues or lymph nodes)
  • Stage 4 Liver Cancer Survival Rate is around 3-10% (Metastatic liver cancer, with spread to other organs)

These survival rates are based on large-scale studies and represent general estimates. Factors such as the patient’s age, liver function, and response to treatment can significantly influence individual outcomes.

Debra Bowler

If an annoying cyst on my hand hadn’t interfered with my normal daily routine, I might not have discovered that I had late-stage lung cancer. What was even more frightening was when my oncologist told me that the 5-year survival rate was at most 15%.

Well, it’s only now, after more than 8 years since my diagnosis, that I’m able to relax a bit and just live my life including to help launch XpertPatient.com.   Creating a truly patient-centric experience has been one of the most incredible things I’ve done since my diagnosis.  Knowing that my insights and experience are helping other cancer survivors through their journey is definitely rewarding.
